How to Transfer Music From Ipod to Itunes and Pc

April 11th, 2009
ipod itune asked:

Switch the ipod to manual update and enable disk use: This is the first and most basic step for how to transfer music from ipod to itunes.

1. Open itunes on your old computer.

2. Connect your ipod to your old computer and wait for it to appear in itunes.

3. Select your ipod in the Source pane under the Devices section to display your ipod preferences in the main library window.

4. Click the Summary tab in the main itunes window.

5. Click the Manually manage music button. Changing from automatic updating to manual puts a check mark by Enable disk use. A message says “Disabling automatic update requires manually unmounting the ipod before each disconnect.”

6. Click OK in the message window.

7. Click Apply in the ipod preferences section of the itunes window.

2. Is there enough room on the ipod? ipod shares its hard disk space between the songs that itunes puts on it and any files you’ve added when using its disk mode. To transfer music with your ipod, you need enough free space to hold a copy of all your music files in addition to any copies that may already have been placed by itunes (this is because non-purchased songs placed on the ipod by itunes cannot be copied off the ipod while in disk mode). To figure out how much space you have on your ipod:

1. Open itunes on your old computer.

2. Click on Music in the Source pane. The size of your library appears at the bottom of the itunes window.

3. Connect your ipod to your old computer and wait for it to appear in itunes.

4. Click the ipod under the Devices section of the Source pane. The amount of free space on the ipod appears near the bottom of the itunes window.

3. Copy itunes folder to ipod To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your ipod:

1. Quit itunes.

2. Locate your ipod:

? Mac OS X: On the desktop

? Windows: In My Computer

3. Locate your itunes folder:

? Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music

? Windows: Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsMy Music

4. Drag the itunes folder to the ipod. This can take a while if you have a lot of songs.

5. When the copy completes open itunes.

6. Click on the ipod in the Source pane

7. Click the Eject button in the lower right corner of the itunes window.

8. Disconnect the ipod from the computer when the “Do not disconnect” message no longer appears on the ipod screen.

4. Get itunes ready on your new computer To get itunes ready to accept all your music on your new computer:

1. Download and install the latest version of itunes.

2. Open itunes on your new computer. If this is your first time to open itunes on your new computer you will need to choose your options in the itunes Setup Assistant.

3. Connect the ipod to your new computer.

5. Copy music from ipod to new computer To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your new computer:

1. Locate your Music folder (Mac OS X) or your My Music folder (Windows) on your new computer:

? Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music

? Windows: Documents and SettingsusernameMy DocumentsMy Music

2. Drag the itunes folder in this location out to the desktop.

3. Locate the ipod on the new computer:

? Mac OS X: On the desktop.

? Windows: In My Computer.

4. Double-click on the ipod to open it.

5. Drag the itunes folder from the ipod to the Music folder (Mac OS X) or My Music Folder (Windows) on your new computer. This can take a while if you have a lot of songs.

6. Open itunes.

Ipod Nano Review

February 23rd, 2009
Josh R Evans asked:

First impressions

The curved design, for instance, calls to mind the MacBook Air and gives the impression that the iPod nano is even thinner than its modest 6.2 mm (0.24 inch). The aluminium and glass body, combined with the new shape and a weight of just 36.8 grams (1.3 ounces), also make the iPod nano comfortable to use. The one possible drawback to the comfort factor, though, is the sharpness of the corners. This shouldn’t be a problem unless you have the iPod nano in a pocket and it jabs you as you sit down.

The corners are a minor niggle, however, and perhaps an inevitable aspect of a design that places the iPod nano screen in an “upright” position. The display, in fact, is the same as the third generation iPod nano horizontal widescreen – but round the other way.

When you switch on the iPod nano and work through the menu, it’s clear that this change to the screen’s orientation has led to improvements. The Preview Panel, for example, is smaller and allows significantly more space for menu titles and item names. You can even deactivate the Preview Panel for yet more display space.

These enhancements come hand in hand with a larger font size, a revamped layout, and new graphics. The overall result is an iPod that’s simpler to navigate than its predecessors.

Features

Simplicity is always welcome, as are features that boost the pleasure of using an iPod. The nano has three new features in particular that are well worth a look.

Genius is a piece of software available with iTunes 8 that now runs on fourth generation iPod nanos. The best way of summarising Genius is to say that you can choose a song and let Genius recommend music that goes well with it. Genius also creates 25, 50, or 100 song playlists based on these suggestions.

Another key extra relates not to music but to video. You may already be wondering about the advisability of playing videos on the iPod nano’s vertical screen. Apple’s answer is straightforward: you put the iPod nano on its side, to either the left or right. A built-in accelerometer takes note and broadcasts your video in normal widescreen format.

If you’re searching in the main or Music menus, the accelerometer also brings Cover Flow onto your screen when you tilt the iPod nano through 90 degrees. You can then search for an album by browsing the covers (which appear in alphabetical order).

The games players among you will immediately recognise the potential of the accelerometer. Sure enough, you can now move the iPod nano, from side to side for instance, to help you negotiate the challenges of games such as Klondike, Maze, and Vortex.

A further technique now available thanks to the accelerometer is “shake to shuffle”. Give the iPod nano an energetic shake when you’re listening to music, and you’ll hear your songs in random order.

This does raise the issue of whether your iPod nano will switch to Shuffle mode when you’re jogging or at the gym. Tests show this doesn’t happen: you need to wave your iPod nano fairly enthusiastically to activate “shake to shuffle”. In any event, if you’re concerned about this you can simply press the nano’s Hold switch to turn “shake to shuffle” off.

The final new feature of the iPod nano is Spoken Menus. This improves the nano’s usability for people with visual impairments (as do other accessibility features such as the white on black video captions and the availability of a larger font).

Spoken Menus tells you what you’re browsing. It gives you the titles of menus, songs, albums, and artists, and lets you know when the battery is running low. All in all, it’s an impressive addition.

Technology

The fourth generation iPod nano’s screen is the same as the preceding model: a two inch LCD with LED backlight, and 320 x 240 pixel resolution at 204 pixels per inch. This still keeps the screen at the forefront of available technology.

With storage Apple has improved capacity by doubling it for the two new iPod nano models to 8GB and 16GB. This means you can place up to 2,000 or 4,000 songs in 128Kbps AAC format on your nano; 7,000 or 14,000 iPod suitable photos; or 8 or 16 hours of video. When you bear in mind that you can also store items in your iTunes library, you have more than enough room for daily use.

Performance

The screen may have the same technology as the third generation, but there’s nothing wrong with this. Picture outlines are sharp, and the colours vivid. The edges curve slightly to match the styling of the nano’s aluminium body, but there’s no evident picture distortion. And although the screen’s covering is now glass, it resists glare and provides clear images.

Audio quality with the iPod nano’s standard earphones is easily as good as the excellent sound reproduced by the third generation models. If you have the good fortune to own top of the range headphones, however, you’ll notice that the fourth generation nano is better because it eliminates background hiss almost completely.

As for power, tests show you can squeeze about 25% - 30% more life from the new iPod nano battery than Apple’s official figures of 24 hours for audio and 4 hours for video. Add this to a charge time of just one and half hours to 80% capacity, and three hours to full charge, and you have a long-lasting and easily revived digital media player.

Conclusion

Once again, Apple has produced an iPod that sets a high standard for others to follow.

Pros

Great range of colours

Distinctive design change

Lightweight

Improvements to accessibility

New features such as Genius and the accelerometer

More storage

Good battery life

Cons

New shape has sharp corners and may not appeal to everyone

How to Fix a Broken Ipod

February 11th, 2009
Alexandru asked:

The sad face appears on your iPod screen. You hear a clicking sound (the sound of the hard drive having difficulty spinning).

Have you had these 3 problems going on with your iPod? Then this method just might make your iPod start working again!

Steps

1. Turn your iPod on. Make sure the battery is charged up enough to turn it on.

2. The sad iPod or sad folder should pop up on the screen.

3. Put your ear up against the iPod and you will hear the clicking sound inside (it sounds like a car trying to start up, whenever it takes a few tries turning the keys)

4. While the iPod is still making these sounds, take the iPod in one hand, open the palm of your other hand, and smack the narrow side of the iPod against the palm of your other hand. [WARNING: This method is proven to work as an effortless way to repair iPod hard drive misalignment, but it may result in future hardware problems. This is only a TEMPORARY solution to fixing an iPod, and the problem may come back (experiences vary). Other methods of reviving a dead iPod are available below and may be much safer]

5. Continue smacking it on its side for at least 6 times, while the iPod is trying to turn on. The key is to loosen the hard drive.

6. After this is should resume normal function. If it doesn’t, read below.

7. There are several methods out there that have all successfully fixed iPods, so don’t give up hope yet.

8. If, however, you are a more hands-on type of person and don’t want to bother trying iPod aid through your computer, skip to the bottom of this steps page for info on how to open and repair internally.

9. The first reccomended steps are from Apple’s support website.

1. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.

2. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.

3. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .

4. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer’s FireWire and USB ports.

5. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes. http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

6. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues. http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/

7. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651

10. If none of the above has worked for you, then you should try the following:

1. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.

2. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.

1. For Mac computer:

1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it

2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3

3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4

4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options….” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.

5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset

6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

2. For Windows computer:

1. Go to folder “My Computer”

2. Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod

3. Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked

4. Now select “Format”

5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset

6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

7. In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.

3. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won’t show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it. Note:* It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.* It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.* You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

11. iPod still doesn’t work? Keep going with these steps.

* Diagnostic mode solution:

o If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod’s built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a “bad” iPod.

o You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.

o Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.

+ iPod 1G to 3G: “Menu” and “Play/Pause”

+ iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): “Menu” and “Select”

o The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:

+ iPod 1G to 3G: “REW”, “FFW” and “Select”

+ iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): “Back” and “Select”

o You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using “REW” and “FFW”. The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/

o Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.

* Format your iPod with a start disk:

o I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.

12. The next tutorial will teach you how to open up your iPod and attempt to fix it. This should probably be done as a last resort, for opening your iPod will most likely void your warranty. In addition, if executed wrong, your iPod may sustain permanant damage while your problem may have ben easily aided by other processes.

* The best tutorial I’ve read on how to open an iPod is here: http://forums.ipodlounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93789/

13. That tutorial is how to open a 3rd/4th Generation iPod, although most are similarly done. Google it if you’re not satisfied and want more detail; there are a lot of great sites out there.

* Once inside, there are a number of methods you can use that have all been used to fix iPod problems. Make sure the hold switch is on! You don’t want to hit a button and mess something up! The methods will be listed in order of how successful I believe they are.

14. Disconnecting the Hard Drive and Booting Method.

1. Now that your iPod is open, you should see your hard drive lying flat on top. The ribbon cable attached to the hard drive is detachable, so don’t be scared.

2. Gently pull the hard drive away from the cable in which it’s connected, while holding the cable lightly in hand. You don’t want to rip it out the motherboard.

3. Your hard drive should easily break free. Now that it’s out, you can play with it, look around, but the point is to give it a little rest.

4. Next, now that the hard drive is out, carefully flip your iPod over so you’re looking at the screen. Be careful not to rip the ribbon cable by the hold switch.

5. Take the iPod off of hold function, thus enabling the buttons once again.

6. Turn the iPod on. You may recieve an error message, and you may be able to access menus.

1. If you get an error message, try restarting the iPod.

7. Now turn the iPod off.

8. Reactivate the hold switch. Your experiment is complete.

9. Reconnect the hard drive as found before, and carefully replace the back cover. Hope it works.

15. Business Card Method.

1. Now that your iPod is open, you should see your hard drive lying flat on top.

2. Take a regular business card and fold it in half.

3. Place the folded business card on top of the hard drive. (The idea is that your iPod’s hard drive is too loose and the folded business card will put pressure on it when enclosed for a successful spin and no click. This works often). Don’t fold it more than once unless you have a reason, because more pressure on the hard drive may keep it from spinning, causing even more problems.

4. Carefully place the lid back on the iPod, making sure the card is in place correctly.

5. Close up your iPod and hope it works.

16. Time to Spend Some $$ Method.

1. Get a job.

2. You probably have a hardware problem (like me), and you probably need a new hard drive. Google it. eBay it. A regular replacement hard drive isn’t as much as a new iPod, but you’ll have to shell out a couple bucks if you want it fixed.

3. Look at it as an opportunity to upgrade. Maybe look into buying a bigger hard drive to hold more useless shit. It’ll still cost less than a new iPod.

4. Read above for info on how to replace your hard drive. It’s not hard.

5. Pray it’s a hard drive problem after you bought one and can’t return it.

17. If you’ve read this far, you’ve tried everything, and your iPod still isn’t fixed, then ask someone else already. You’ve been up all night reading this tutorial and trying my methods and you’re probably sick of this anyway. Or just steal your friend’s iPod.

Tips

* Make sure that the iPod has enough battery power to turn on.

* An alternative is open up your iPod (which voids the warranty) and squeeze the drive and it’s enclosing padding. There is apparently some grounding that can come loose and this can fix things up again. This worked for me and a friend and if you are very careful when you open the case, it is less violent than smacking it around.

* You can also go to an Apple store and ask to replace the battery! They are happy to help you!

* Don’t steal your friend’s iPod.

Warnings

* Before trying these methods, contact Apple and see if you can get your iPod replaced for free.

* This method should only be as a last resort. If Apple’s suggestions do not work, first try running a chkdsk function on your iPod.

* Do not break the hard drive!

Cheap Ipods and Cheap Iphones for Sale

January 3rd, 2009
Suraj Kumar asked:

The iPod series is the audio player of Apple, and it is the fastest moving players in town today. Ever see someone walking around with a white wire hanging from their ear? They are either using an original iPod or fake iPod earphones. Everyone wants to have an iPod or an iPhone.

Buying an iPod or iPhone, however, can be a strain on the pocket, especially if you are a student without a part time job. Finding the iPod you can afford does not have to be like climbing Mount Everest. You can find an original cheap iPod easily, if you persevere and do the proper research.

Before you start going around begging for money to buy your iPod, you should first check out the different kinds of iPods available in the market. Then, once you have made your choice of model, you can go out and find that cheap iPod for sale, with our help, of course.

There are 4 kinds of iPod to choose from: the iPod Nano, iPod shuffle, mega iPod, and the iPod touch. Each model has corresponding memory capacity which dictates its price. The cheapest iPod for sale is the iPod shuffle. It is a tiny device that has 1 GB and weighs only 15 grams. You can bring it along with you easily by clipping it on to your bag or outfit.

The next cheapest iPod for sale is the iPod Nano. You can get one with either 4GB or 8GB. This means you can carry over 1000 tunes in your Nano unlike the shuffle which has a memory capacity for 250 songs only.

The iPod classic is Apple’s audio device that has a tremendous memory capacity of 80 to 160 GB. You can upload not only music, but also videos and pictures. This is the ultimate toy on the go.

Finally, the iPod touch. It’s almost like the iPhone without the phone. With this model, you get a bigger screen, greater memory, and Wi-fi.

Knowing the model you want will help you get your iPod or iPhone faster. There are many ways to get a cheap iPod or iPhone. For one, you could take your chances and join a contest that gives out the Apple products, except the chances are slim that you will win an iPhone or iPod.

Have you ever considered an auction? There are reliable sources on the internet that offer cheap iPods for sale, and cheap iPhone for sale as well. By bidding on the Apple product you want, you can get your cheap iPhone at a price you can afford. In most cases, you just have to make sure that the auction website you transact with is trustworthy and reliable. Make sure you choose a site that has credibility and good reviews.

Finding a cheap iPod and a cheap iPhone will mean buying one that has been slightly used or refurbished. This is why you need to check who you are dealing with. Remember that cheap iPods and cheap iPhones for sale do not mean they are inferior products or are fake. Not at all. If you go to a reputable auction site that sells cheap iPods, it will only mean that the iPod or iPhone has been used by its owner, and for some reason, needs or wants to sell it.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting your iPod or iPhone the cheap way. It would only mean you have good business sense, you are practical, and resourceful. Now, those are great traits to have, so use them to get your cheap iPod and iPhone at a sale price that will be well worth the effort.

The Evolution of Ipods

December 24th, 2008
Josh R Evans asked:

The beginning

On 23 October, 2001, Apple released the first ever iPod . It appeared after less than a year’s development, and was Apple’s response to what it saw as a gap in the personal digital market. Until this point, digital music players were too large to be practical or too small to work properly. Apple changed this situation overnight with a 5GB device of modest size that held up to a 1,000 songs.

The first iPod was white with a monochrome screen. Users navigated it with a mechanical scroll wheel and a centre button. Other features included a FireWire rather than a USB connection, and a battery that held a charge for about ten hours of music playback.

The iPod made its mark instantly. Although it was only compatible with Mac computers, Windows users employed third party software to get round this problem. It was clear Apple could fill the gap in the market that the company had identified.

iTunes

iTunes became available in January 2001, nine months before the first iPod. iTunes formed part of Apple’s iLife software, and enabled users to transfer the content of CDs to their Macs, organise the music, and play it through their computers. The arrival of the iPod, together with iTunes 2.0, meant that everyone could now go one step further and copy their music from computers to portable players.

Since iTunes 2.0, Apple has introduced regular iTunes updates. The iTunes Store came online in April 2003, and six months later iTunes 4.1 made iTunes compatible with Windows. Further developments include access to music videos; podcasts; audiobooks; films; TV programmes; games; and applications. Apple has complemented these improvements with features such as Album Artwork; Cover Flow; and, most recently, Genius.

Technology

The first iPod stored music on a hard drive, a medium that the iPod Classic continues using to this day. iPod minis (January 2004 – September 2005) had one inch microdrives with either 4GB or 6GB capacities. The iPod nano, shuffle, and touch have always had flash memories.

Colour screens arrived with the fourth generation iPod, also known as the iPod photo, in October 2004. From June the following year, all iPods dropped the black and white screens and had colour displays. These developed further into the two inch, two and a half inch, and three and a half inch screens that are now part of the nano, classic, and touch respectively.

The iPod’s controls began with the mechanical scroll wheel. A touch-sensitive wheel, and then the Click Wheel, followed this. The third generation iPod, however, combined a wheel with four horizontal buttons beneath the screen from April 2003. Apple changed this layout to just a touch-sensitive wheel in July 2004.

The most significant departure from the wheel arrangement appears on the iPod touch. Released in September 2007, the iPod touch has a Multi-Touch screen that users tap and run their fingers across to control the iPod’s functions.

The Click Wheel remains, though, as one of the distinctive features of the iPod classic and iPod nano ranges. The iPod shuffle, first released in January 2005, has a five button arrangement in the shape of a circle.

Connectivity for iPods has also changed. To begin with, Apple maintained exclusive use of FireWire, the original connection for iPods. In April 2003, with the advent of the third generation iPod, Apple included USB connectivity for the first time. In September 2005, all iPod models became USB only. This move confirmed iPods as the leading portable music player, and reflected the need to link to all computers.

Storage capacity

Apple began the iPod range with 5GB of storage. Within six months, a 10GB model appeared, followed by a 20GB second generation iPod in July 2002. Storage capacity hit its peak in September 2007 with the 160GB model of the sixth generation iPod (the “classic”), although this has since been dropped. The highest capacity, with the potential to hold 30,000 songs or 150 hours of video on a 1.8 inch hard drive, is the current 120GB iPod classic.

The latest iPod shuffle offers 1GB and 2GB options for 240 or 500 songs. The nano has 8GB and 16GB, and the iPod touch gives you a choice of 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. iPod owners also have the ability to store digital media in their iTunes libraries.

Windows

Windows users who bought first generation iPods had to obtain software such as XPlay because they couldn’t download iTunes. To ease this problem, Apple released two versions of second generation iPods in October 2002. One came with iTunes for Mac owners; the other had Musicmatch Jukebox for Windows users.

In October 2003, Apple launched iTunes for Windows, and from then on all iPods were suitable for Mac and Windows users. Today, iPods no longer come with iTunes: the software is available to everyone as a free download.

Video

One of the most significant boosts for iPods was the introduction of video. This came with the fifth generation iPod in October 2005. Originally available in 30GB and 60GB versions, the fifth generation was slimmer than its predecessor and with a larger screen.

Battery support for video playback was two hours for the 30GB model, and three hours for the 60GB. This jumped to six and half hours, however, with the arrival of the 80GB fifth generation upgrade in September 2006.

Video playback is now a standard feature on the iPod classic, the touch and the nano.

Sales

iPods are the most popular type of digital music player in the world. Their share of the market is more than 70%, and total sales have exceeded 160 million. Apple has sold around a quarter of this figure within the last year.

Driving these sales is Apple’s never-ending desire to improve and innovate. The latest models are perfect examples of this approach and represent the best that’s now available in the digital music player market.

Top 25 Transfer Music From Ipod To Computer Links

December 12th, 2008
Sydney Nelson asked:

Transferring music from your iPod to your computer is easy to do if you have the tools. Unfortunately, the iPod is designed to prevent us from sharing our music. Which is understandable, because the music industry is reeling from the technology which allows us to copy music CDs, and reducing their profits.

But the problem is longstanding, ever since the old cassette tape players were used to record music, straight from the radio.

So, what should you do if your computer with all your iTunes goes on the bum, or even worse, just breaks. You’re stuck, without any way to transfer your tunes to your new computer.

Until now!

As technology goes, there are always folks who will find a way to beat the system, and this article will outline 25 options for transferring your tunes from your beloved iPod to your computer. Some are either freeware or shareware and the others of course, come with a nominal price tag.

A couple of the links are actually for transferring photos from your iPod to your computer so I included the link below as an extra. It allows you to transfer tunes and videos between iPods. Lots of folks have more than one iPod and would like to simply copy thier favorites from one iPod to the other or thier friend’s iPod.

December 5th, 2008
kookcoo asked:

Apple iPod touch 8 GB (2nd Generation) - The iPod touch has always been an amazing iPod. And with its groundbreaking technologies–including a Multi-Touch screen, the accelerometer, and 3D graphics–and access to hundreds of games, iPod touch puts an amazing gaming experience in the palm of your hand. It comes in 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB models with new volume controls and a built-in speaker. Play hours of music. Create a Genius Playlist of songs that go great together. Watch a movie. Surf the web. View rich HTML email. Find your location and get directions with Google Maps. Browse YouTube videos. And shop the App Store for games and applications.

Music

Music on iPod touch not only sounds amazing, it looks amazing, too.

Touch Your Music

Remember what it felt like to flip through your CD or record collection? Cover Flow brings that feeling back. Just turn iPod touch on its side and flick through your music to find the album you want to hear. Tap the cover to flip it over and display a track list. Tap again to start the music. Even view the lyrics while you’re listening.

A Musical Genius

Say you’re listening to a song you really like and want to hear other tracks that go great with it. The new Genius feature finds the songs in your library that go great together and makes a Genius Playlist for you. You can listen to the playlist right away, save it for later, or even refresh it and give it another go. Count on Genius to create a mix you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.

Fill It Up

Fill up your iPod touch with audio and video from your iTunes library. All you have to do is choose the playlists, videos, and other content you want to sync, and iTunes does the rest.

Movies and TV Shows

Movies and TV shows have never looked this good on a portable device.

Everything’s a Must-see

Carry hours of video with you, and watch it on a crisp, clear 3.5-inch widescreen color display. Need ideas? From Hollywood blockbusters to independent favorites, there’s something for everyone at the iTunes Store. Download and watch movies with a few clicks. Prefer TV shows? Buy a single episode or an entire season’s worth all at once.

In Control

While watching your video, tap the display to bring up the onscreen controls. You can play/pause, view by chapter, and adjust the volume. You also can use the new volume controls on the left side of iPod touch. Want to switch between widescreen and full screen? Simply tap the display twice.

Sync and Go

Need some entertainment for your next flight or road trip? With iTunes on your Mac or PC, you can sit at your computer and choose the movies and TV shows you want to sync to your iPod touch.

Games

With its groundbreaking technologies, iPod touch puts an amazing gaming experience in the palm of your hand.

Get in the Game

Developers all over the world are creating exciting games unlike anything you’ve ever seen on an iPod or mobile device. Many games come alive with stunning 3D graphics and immerse you in the action with the advanced technologies in iPod touch. There’s even a built-in speaker, so you can hear all the action.

Fingertip Control

Many games for iPod touch use Multi-Touch to give you precise, fingertip control over game elements. Use your finger to drag your pieces around the board in chess or dice games. Or pinch to enlarge or shrink your view, rotate your character left or right, or just tap to make a selection.

Tilt, Turn, and Go

The built-in accelerometer actually responds to your movements, so you can tilt and turn your iPod touch to control the action. It’s perfect for racing games–where your entire iPod touch acts as a steering wheel–and for tap-and-tilt games like Super Monkey Ball, in which your character rolls to your movements.

The App Store

Even if games aren’t your thing, there’s an iPod touch application for you. Thousands of applications in almost every category–entertainment, social networking, sports, photography, reference, and travel–are a tap away at the App Store.

iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store

Discover new music anywhere.

Buy on the Fly

The built-in wireless capability in iPod touch gives you access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, where you can choose from millions of songs with a tap. Browse New Releases, What’s Hot, and Genres. Take a look at Top Songs and Top Albums. Or find exactly what you’re looking for with a quick search. Play a 30-second preview of any song, then tap once to buy it. Your music starts downloading instantly, and you can keep tabs on its progress by tapping the Downloads button.

Sync it Back

When you connect iPod touch to your computer, the music you bought on-the-go syncs to your iTunes library. If you’ve partially downloaded a song to iPod touch, your computer completes the download automatically.

iPod touch at Starbucks

If you have an iPod touch, an iPhone, or a computer with the latest version of iTunes, you get free Wi-Fi access to the iTunes Store and to Starbucks’ Now Playing content. Stroll into a participating Starbucks, and you’re connected automatically.

Home Screen

Get instant access to whatever you need on your iPod touch.

Customize Your Home Screen

Arrange the icons on your Home screen any way you want. Even move them to another Home screen. Create up to nine Home screens for quick access to the games and applications you download from the App Store and to your Safari Web Clips.

Go Home

No matter where you are on iPod touch, you can press the Home button to return to the Home screen. You can go back to what you were doing at any time.

Add Apps, Web Clips, and More

Whenever you download an application from the App Store, a new icon appears on your Home screen. And if you check the same websites every day, just create Web Clips and you can access the sites directly from your Home screen with a single tap. Not happy with how they’re organized? Reorder them any way you want by dragging them around the screen.

Safari

iPod touch features Safari, the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device.

Browse Anywhere

The iPod touch is the only iPod with 802.11b/g wireless access to the web. Whenever you’re connected via Wi-Fi, you can access your favorite websites to read news, check scores, pay bills, and go shopping.

Search and Find

iPod touch syncs your bookmarks from your PC or Mac, so you can access favorite sites quickly. It has Google and Yahoo! search built in, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for on the web.

Zoom with a View

Get a closer look at any web page by zooming in and out with a tap or a pinch of the Multi-Touch display. View websites in portrait or landscape. Rotate iPod touch 90 degrees and the website rotates, too.

Clip it.

If you check a website frequently–a favorite newspaper, blog, or sports site–why not create a Home screen icon for it? Make Web Clips with Safari, and your favorite sites are always just a tap away.

Mail

Email on iPod touch looks and works just like email on your computer.

See it All

iPod touch supports rich HTML email, so images and photos appear alongside text. And you see email attachments in their original formats, not stripped-down versions. Rotate, zoom, and pan in more than a dozen standard file and image formats, including PDF; Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and iWork.

Access it All

Access your email from popular providers–including MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Google Gmail, and AOL–and most industry-standard IMAP and POP mail systems.

Send Fast

iPod touch recognizes email addresses in different applications. If you run across an email address on a web page or a map listing, for example, just tap it; iPod touch opens a new message and addresses it for you.

Type Smart

With its built-in dictionary, the intelligent iPod touch keyboard predicts and suggests words as you type, making it fast and easy to write email.

Maps

When you’re connected via Wi-Fi, you can get directions, find local businesses, and check traffic.

Find Yourself

iPod touch finds your location using known Wi-Fi hotspots. It also finds points of interest by keyword: Search for “coffee” and iPod touch shows you every cafe nearby.

Get Directions

Just type in an address and get directions from wherever you are. View a list of turn-by-turn directions, or see a highlighted map route. You also can mark specific locations and find the best route between them.

Enjoy the View

Just like Google Maps on your computer, Maps on iPod touch lets you switch between views of Google map data, satellite images, and a hybrid of both. Multi-Touch makes the difference. Tap to zoom, pan, and change your view on the move.

See Traffic

Maps on iPod touch shows you live traffic information, indicating traffic speed along your route in easy-to-read green, red, and yellow highlights.

YouTube

Love to watch the latest YouTube videos? iPod touch gives you all the fun of the web’s best videos–pocket-size.

Share from Anywhere

Email your favorite videos to your favorite people. Tap “Share” on any YouTube video detail page, and iPod touch creates an email with the video link already in it.

Watch What You Want

Explore Featured, Most Viewed, Most Recent, and Top Rated videos. Or search for the video you want with a keyword search. Once you find what you’re looking for, bookmark it to watch later.

Photos

Carry up to 25,000 of your favorite photos everywhere.

Share Photos

Show thousands of photos from the palm of your hand. Flick to scroll through thumbnails. Tap to view full screen. Rotate to see a photo in landscape. Pinch to zoom in or out. Play slideshows, complete with music and transitions. Email a photo to a friend, set it as your wallpaper, or share it in a MobileMe Gallery.

Save Photos

If you receive a great image in an email, save it to your photo library on iPod touch. Once there, it acts just like any other photo. You can set it as your wallpaper, share it on the web, or pass it on.

Sync Photos

iPod touch uses iTunes to sync photos you have in iPhoto on a Mac or Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop Album on a PC. Just choose which photos or albums to sync to your iPod touch, then you can look at them–and share them–anywhere you go.

Calendar

With iPod touch, it’s easy to make plans and stay on schedule.

Add Events

Keep your schedule at your fingertips with iPod touch. Add events to your calendar. Set a custom alert. Write a note or two. Manage multiple color-coded calendars. And do it all with just a few taps.

Stay in Sync

Connect iPod touch to your computer, and the events that you’ve created on-the-go automatically sync to Microsoft Outlook on a PC or iCal on a Mac. And all the events you’ve added on your computer sync to iPod touch.

Three Ways to View

iPod touch gives you three ways to view your calendars. List view shows you all your appointments in the coming days as a comprehensive list, which you can scroll up and down. Day view displays one day’s worth of appointments visually. And Month view offers an at-a-glance look at an entire month.

Contacts

Put names, email addresses, phone numbers, and more at your fingertips.

Make Contact

Build your contacts list on your Mac with Address Book or on your PC with Microsoft Outlook, then sync everything to your iPod touch using iTunes. You also can add contact information directly to your iPod touch from maps, web pages, and email. Next time you sync, your computer is updated, too.

Search Contacts

If you have a lot of contacts, a quick search shows you a list of matching names. Or you can scroll up and down your entire list to find the right contact. Want to send them an email? Just tap an email address and the Mail application opens automatically.

Organized by Groups

If you keep your contacts organized into groups–such as co-workers, friends, family, and so on–iPod touch will, too. And iPod touch can hold more than just names, email addresses, and phone numbers. You also can track birthdays, websites, nicknames, and notes.

Stocks, Weather, and Notes

Stay on top of it all.

Check Stocks

Stocks on iPod touch shows you performance information for any stock you choose. When you want more details about a stock’s performance, tap the Y! for instant access to Yahoo! Finance.

Get Weather

Check worldwide weather at home or away. Add the cities you want, then flick back and forth to get six-day forecasts for each. Tap the Y! to open a Yahoo! city guide that shows you what’s happening, rain or shine.

Take Notes

Forget the pen and paper. Use Notes on iPod touch to write yourself a quick note and keep important information on hand. There’s even a built-in email function that lets you send notes to yourself or others.

Calculator

Calculator on iPod touch helps you settle the restaurant bill or keep track of your budget.

Calculate Simply

When you tap the Calculator icon, iPod touch shows you a simple application with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and memory functions. Use it just as you would a pocket calculator.

Calculate Scientifically

Your simple calculator doubles as a sophisticated scientific calculator. Just rotate it to landscape to access dozens of functions for solving complex science and math problems

Nike + iPod

Tune Your Run

iPod touch now includes built-in Nike + iPod support. Just slip the Nike + iPod Sensor (available separately) into your Nike+ shoe and start your run. The sensor communicates wirelessly with your iPod touch, tracking your time, distance, and calories burned. It even gives you voice feedback on your progress.

Tune Your Cardio Workout

This feature also works with new cardio equipment available in many fitness centers. Just look for treadmills, ellipticals, stair steppers, and stationary bikes that are Nike + iPod compatible.

Sync with Nikeplus.com

When you get back to your computer, sync your iPod touch via iTunes and transfer your exercise data to nikeplus.com, where you can track your workouts, set goals, and challenge friends.

Multi-Touch

iPod touch features the same revolutionary interface as iPhone.

Glide, Flick, Pinch

Built to take full advantage of the large 3.5-inch display, the Multi-Touch touchscreen interface lets you control everything using only your fingers. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely.

How it Works

The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the LCD screen below it. iPod touch software enables the flick, tap, and pinch.

Type with the Touchscreen Keyboard

iPod touch features an intelligent touchscreen keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, getting directions on a map, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, or adding new contacts. It analyzes keystrokes to suggest words as you type and correct spelling errors automatically. And because it’s software based, it changes its keys to support typing in multiple languages.

Accelerometer

iPod touch responds to motion using a built-in accelerometer.

Responds to Movement

iPod touch detects when you rotate it from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display. So you immediately see the entire width of a web page, view a photo in its proper aspect ratio, or control a game using only your movements.

How it Works

The accelerometer inside iPod touch uses three elements: a silicon mass, a set of silicon springs, and an electrical current. The silicon springs measure the position of the silicon mass using the electrical current. Rotating iPod touch causes a fluctuation in the electrical current passing through the silicon springs. The accelerometer registers these fluctuations and tells iPod touch to adjust the display accordingly.

Perfect for Gaming

Accelerometer technology really shines when you play games because it immerses you in the action. It’s perfect for racing games–where your entire iPod touch acts as a steering wheel–and for tap-and-tilt games like Super Monkey Ball, in which your character responds to your every movement.

Wireless

Connect iPod touch to the Internet anywhere there’s a wireless network.

Connect Automatically

iPod touch locates nearby wireless hotspots, including protected networks. If you’ve never used a particular network, it asks you to enter a password the first time, and it remembers the password from then on. So the next time you’re within range, it connects automatically.

Surf’s Up

Now you can send email from a coffee shop. Surf the web at the airport. Shop for games from your couch. Browse, buy, and download music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store at select Starbucks locations or other wireless hotspots in your area.

What’s in the Box

iPod touch 8 GB, earphones, USB 2.0 cable, dock adapter, polishing cloth, quick start guide

Ipod Vs Competitors

December 3rd, 2008
Josh R Evans asked:

The iPod has always had competition in the MP3 market. This comes from well-known names such as Cowon, Creative, Samsung, Sony, and Phillips; and yet Apple’s iPods continues to outsell every other brand worldwide.

The appeal of the iPod

One reason for this dominance is that Apple knows what its customers want. The four models in the iPod range – the shuffle, nano, iPod Classic, and touch – reflect different customer needs and offer distinct MP3 experiences.

The iPod shuffle, for instance, is a basic MP3 player of superb quality. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to carry a wide selection of their favourite music in a tiny, almost feather-light device.

The iPod nano is a remarkably compact media player. You can choose from up to 4,000 songs on the 16GB version, or up to 16 hours of video. You can also store thousands of photos, and play games.

The iPod classic is a remarkable storage device. With its 120GB hard drive, you can carry a substantial music library wherever you go – up to 30,000 songs, in fact. If you prefer watching films or TV programmes on the classic’s bright, LED backlit screen, you can load up to 150 hours of viewing. With the ability to listen to 36 hours of music between battery charges, or six hours of video, the iPod classic is a portable powerhouse for digital media.

The appeal of the iPod touch is its brilliant versatility. In addition to being an MP3 player, it has built-in Wi-Fi technology. The touch can therefore download music, video, podcasts, games, and applications without the need for a computer, as well as receive and send email. It also has some of Apple’s cutting-edge software, complemented by a three and a half inch Multi-Touch screen.

Consistent quality

The consumer choice offered by these four iPod models is comprehensive; but in a market where a number of manufacturers are associated with superior products, customers want consistent high quality. If they don’t receive this, they lose faith in a company. Apple knows this, and hasn’t let its customers down.

Since introducing its first iPod in 2001, Apple has put quality at the front of its manufacturing policy. Every iPod is extremely well-engineered. The robust casings resist the knocks and scrapes that all MP3 players endure; and on the inside, the technology is what you’d expect from a maker renowned for the graphics and audio capabilities of its computers.

Innovation

Along with quality, consumers like to see frequent innovation, particularly with technological products such as portable media players. Unlike some of its competitors, Apple has regularly introduced new and exciting developments to the iPod range. In fact, you can almost take for granted that a new generation iPod will have at least one ground-breaking additional feature.

Such an approach to innovation is part of the iPod heritage. It gives Apple an edge over the competition and provides you with the most advanced MP3 players available.

Style

The look of an MP3 player is critical to its sales success. People like to have products that are elegant and clutter-free.

This is why Apple chooses its materials for the iPod range so carefully. Brushed aluminium, polished steel, and high quality glass form the casings of the iPods. Using such smooth and sleek exteriors is not enough, however. The shape of the iPods is also a vital part of the overall concepts.

Apple’s success in this area is thanks to curved designs, thin bodies, compact size, and lightness. The iPod shuffle, for example, weighs a mere 15.6 grams (0.55 ounce). The iPod nano is just 90.7 mm (3.6 inches) high by 38.7 mm (1.5 inches) wide. The iPod classic, despite its large hard drive capacity, covers less than half the surface area of a CD case. As for the iPod touch, it’s a mere 8.5 mm (0.33 inch) thick.

The distinctive wheel-shaped controls and the discrete positions of the ports and switches add to the overall sense of style on the iPod shuffle, nano, and classic. The iPod touch stands out thanks to its Multi-Touch screen that in itself is a statement of technological achievement and flair.

It’s hard to find any other MP3 players that can match an iPod’s sheer good looks. Colour

Yet another feature that distinguishes iPods from their competitors is the choice of colour Apple offers for the shuffle and the nano.

You can order a shuffle in one of five colours: blue, green, pink, red, and silver. The nano has an additional four: black, orange, purple, and yellow. All these colours are bright and wear-resistant, and help to personalise your iPod. They also add to the fun of using an MP3 player.

Extras

MP3 players are gadgets, and as with all such devices, people want useful, interesting extras. There can be little doubt that Apple meets this demand far more successfully than anyone else.

The shake-to-shuffle feature on the iPod nano; Wi-Fi connectivity on the iPod touch; and the Genius playlist feature on the iPod nano, classic, and touch are three examples of recent developments that have caught people’s imaginations. These extras are the latest in a history of additions that help make iPods such desirable gadgets to own.

iTunes

iPods also maintain a significant advantage over other MP3 players because of iTunes. iTunes is the free software that lets you organise your digital media into a library and transfer it to your iPod. It also offers a store in which you can buy music, films, TV programmes and audiobooks from a vast selection. You can even rent certain films, and obtain podcasts without charge.

The best

Apple started the portable media player revolution and has continued to develop the iPod ever since with spectacular results. Look through any sales catalogue of MP3 players, and it’s clear that where the iPod leads, others try to follow. iPods always set the pace, and the rest never really catch up.
